Match the product to a study brief
Write one brief for all three vendors: research question, target population, exclusion criteria, languages, expected interview length, stimuli and deliverables. Specify whether you already have participants. Separate must-have requirements from conveniences. A prototype task, an experience interview and a sensitive health discussion can impose very different demands. Ask for a demonstration using your brief, not only a polished example chosen by the supplier.
Test the interview, not just the generated report
Try the participant journey on a phone and the devices your sample uses. Test a short answer, a misunderstanding, a refusal and an unexpected topic. Check whether the interviewer probes without suggesting the desired answer and respects the stopping conditions you set. Review the full transcript, including awkward exchanges. Repeat important scenarios because model behaviour can vary. These are proposed pilot checks, not measured weaknesses of any platform in this comparison.
Make recruitment responsibilities explicit
Ask how eligibility is verified, how duplicate or low-effort responses are handled and who approves replacements. Clarify incentives, accessibility, consent and the treatment of incomplete interviews. A large advertised panel does not establish that a niche population is reachable on your timetable. If you bring participants, check invitation links and support needs separately. Avoid treating a recruitment service and an interview software subscription as identical purchase units.
Follow the evidence into the deliverable
Ask the vendor to demonstrate how a report statement links to an interview passage or recording. Look for minority views and counterexamples as well as repeated themes. Check what you can edit, what happens after a transcript correction and which files you can export. For repeated studies, test retrieval across projects and access boundaries. Do not infer that a vendor lacks analysis or a repository simply because a short comparison table leaves it out.
